Lizard Peninsula

The Lizard Peninsula is the most southerly point in mainland UK and is famous for it’s lighthouse and serpentine rock. It forms part of the South West Coast Path and is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (ANOB). Bursting with wildlife, unique geology and steeped in history the Lizard Peninsula has plenty to offer everyone, on land and on the water. Whether this is walking, cycling, kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, surfing, or just sitting and admiring the view.

There are many stunning coves around this area. Many you may have heard of before and others are hidden gems. Kennack Sands with its two sandy beaches and Cadgwith Cove full of fishing boats on the shingle cove and close by. Kynance Cove very popular with tourists, as is Mullion Harbour and Poldhu Cove. I wonder how many more you can discover!

Porthoustock – 3.1 miles and Porthallow 4 miles

These delightful little villages are popular with divers due to the number of wrecks on this part of the coast.

Helford Estuary – 7.8 miles

Stretching from Gweek to Falmouth, the estuary is very diverse. Farmland, creeks, woodland and semi tropical gardens make up this haven for wildlife and peace. Trebah and Glendurgan are spectacular tropical gardens with views right across the estuary. Frenchman’s Creek was made famous by Daphine DuMaurier and many hidden hamlets are worth discovering. A great way to enjoy the Helford is from the water and it is extremely popular for sailing with good facilities.

Gweek – 8.5 miles

Famous for its ‘Seal Sanctuary’ this is a sleepy riverside village is at the head of the Helford river.

Helston – 10 miles

The main town from Coverack, Helston is a market town steeped in history and famous for its ‘Furry or Flora Dance’ that takes place in May every year. It has plenty of supermarkets; Sainsburys, Tesco and Lidl. The community hospital has a minor injury unit. There is also a leisure centre and a cinema.

Falmouth – 17 miles

Falmouth has a unique feel about it, probably due to its mix of people and its history. Some historical facts for you to learn more about: Falmouth Harbour is the third deepest natural harbour in the world, and the deepest in Western Europe, Henry Vlll had Pendennis Castle built and it was made the Royal Mail Packet Station. There are always events taking place in Falmouth such as the International Sea Shanty Festival, The Oyster Festival, Falmouth Week to name but a few.

Lands End – 34 miles

This is the most westerly point in mainland Britain and famous for the many charity events that take place to or from John O’Groats.
